Ultimate Spider-Man: Comic Cult Classic or Cheap Remake?

Being an enormous fan of the Ultimate

Spider-Man comic series, I immediately had to buy
this game. It is a solid free-roaming superhero game with attractive visuals and refreshing character variation. Yet, it wasn't that much different than its predecessor Spider-Man 2. Although the swinging physics are smoother and more stylish, this game left out many fun things that you were able to do in S-M2 such as running up/down a wall for long periods of time or sprinting. The jumping in this game was also lacking a certain spring in your step. The camera made fights frustrating, you were limited to very few combat moves and options. Parker's catchphrases get annoying and ALL OF THE MISSIONS WERE THE SAME. You either faced a boss, chased a boss, or both. The game is also ridiculously short. Its main redeeming point is the Venom gameplay and his unlockable rampage at the end. Fans will love, Gamers will accept.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Licensed Game

but wait! THIS ONE IS BASED ON THE COMICS AND NOT THE MOVIES! PRAISE BUDDHA!

yes indeedy i have completed the new Ultimate Spider-Man game IN UNDER A WEEK! hmm i wonder if it recorded the time somewhere... that is one SHORT game. Expect a fancy review soon. Speaking of tight-clad web-shooting adolescents, i need to get my keister down to Borders and get some more Ultimate Spider-Man issues. I only have the first 4 graphic novels and I've re-read the HELL outta those things. I also need Shadow of the Colossus...

Consarnit

the universe just dealt me a total SHIT hand. the week before i was going to boston, i got sick with this viral throat thing and it gave me frequent fevers and stuff and it made me MISS THE GREATEST CONCERT EVER (coheed and cambria/blood brothers) and it made me STAY HOME FOR THE GREATEST TRIP EVER(boston). RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH IM SO FREAKIN FRUSTRATED!!!! but if I HAD gone to boston i probably wouldve gotten bronchitis and made everyone else on the plane sick because i heard that they were delayed on the runway for two hours waiting for their turn to take off. ugh.

ALSO... In my house all the computers connect to a home portal through cables inside the walls and we use SBC DSL blah blah blah we dont have an Ethernet cable blah blah blah. Needless to say, my house has a very screwed up internet connection, making it almost impossible for newer appliances to work. The other day I bought a Sony Online Adapter for my Playstation 2. I wasted 40 bucks. ITS SO FRUSTRATING!!!

On a lighter note, Shadow of the Colossus is already out, and Liberty City Stories comes out on the 24th. Praise be to God.

PREVIEW: Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

RELEASE DATE: November 22

GENRE: Role-Player

PLAYERS: One

We all know and love Akira Toriyama for his unforgettable accomplishments such as the Dragonball franchise and his lovable but lesser known manga, Dr. Slump. What most wannabe Anime nerds dont know is that Toriyama created a series called Dragon Quest way back in 1986 that started out on the MSX and Famicon game systems. Dragon Quest was the very first RPG that was released on a console. The idea was simple: a lovable RPG in the traditional Zelda format; something ANYONE could play. The games were a huge hit, later spawning its own counterpart: Dragon Warrior. Dragon Quest later branched out to Game Boy and Playstation, leading us all the way up to number eight in the series which is due in late November.
My first impression of the game was a reminder of how infatuating Toriyama's art style is. Being a huge fan of Dragonball, I instantly recognized his traditional cartoony character deseign (with the cell-shading bringing out the drawings superbly) while having enormous lush areas in the background. The story tells of a hero named Eight (coincidence with the number in the series? I think not!) who must aid a king and princess who have been transformed into a white horse and a yoda-esque hairy frog thing by the generic "Evil Lord who Terrorizes Nearby Villages" character. You are set out on a quest to find this villain, with the help of a crafty knight, a chunky bandit, and a busty magician. The fighting is very easy to learn, seeing as though its familiar turn-based action has been done a thousand times, but this game adds an interesting concept. You can take a turn for one of your characters to build up his/her tension, thus letting out more power and damage on the next attack. The NPCs are humorous and keep with Toriyama's infamous style of comedy. Over all I'd say that this game has alot more up its sleeve that I am aware about and that fans of Akira Toriyama should check this out. It is definetly one of the last great RPGs to be released this year. Eight even gets the attention of an attractive barmaid just because he keeps a pet gerbil in his front pocket! Who would've thought that gerbils attracted chicks!?

MGS updates

New Metal Gear Acid 2 details emerge

Director reveals new card upgrade system, retro-boss battle mode, and MGS3: Subsistence connectivity; MGS4's mystery eye patch named.

The Tokyo Game Show 2005 gave gamers the first chance to check out Metal Gear Acid 2's new peripheral-enhanced 3D graphics. Additional details on MGA2 have been disclosed this week, courtesy of the latest issue of Famitsu.
The storyline in Metal Gear Acid 2 sees Solid Snake getting caught by the FBI at the beginning of the game. In exchange for his freedom, Snake agrees to take on a mission in which he infiltrates a private military company. But things turn out to be more than what Snake bargains for, as he learns about the existence of a new Metal Gear.
In a short interview with Famitsu, director Shinta Nojiri disclosed that MGA2 will feature more than 500 different cards in total, more than twice the volume in the original MGA. As a new element, players can "upgrade" their cards in the game by using points. For example, Nojiri hinted that the Naked Snake card from Metal Gear Solid 3 could be upgraded to a card with his later identity--Big Boss.
One major feature that's sure to interest Metal Gear Solid fans is the new "arena mode" in MGA2. In the arena mode, players will be able to fight against the various bosses from the entire MGS series, such as Revolver Ocelot. By winning in the mode, players will be rewarded with rare cards.
Nojiri also revealed that the metallic eye patch that Snake was seen wearing in the Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer from the Tokyo Game Show is actually a device called the "Solid Eye"--the same name as the 3D-vision eyewear peripheral bundled with MGA2.
The Famitsu article also revealed connectivity between MGA2 and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. Players that take in-game snapshots using the camera item while having their PS2s hooked up to a MGA2-equipped PSP (via a USB) can check out their snapshots in 3D on the PSP (via the Solid Eye peripheral).

SOME OTHER SIDE NOTES: SUBSISTENCE ONLINE DETAILS RELEASED

by Sean Draper

With the re-release of the third installment of the Metal Gear Solid Series early next year, fans are anxiously awaiting more details regarding the online modes of Subsistence. Up to eight people can be pitted against eachother in any of five different game modes: Standard and Team Deathmatch, while although not taking as much advantage of kojima's games' stealth feeling, is still healthily anticipated. The other three games do just what you would want out of a MGS online game. Sneaking Missions place one player-controlled Snake in the middle of a heist objective while the other players serve as guards, protecting the object. Capture Missions are basically huge rounds of Bring Home the Bacon, pitting two teams against eachother, having them retrieve a pick-up and return it to their own base. Last, but not least, Rescue Missions have a team of crack operatives deliver an obect a certain location, while having the opposing team attempt to destroy it. The intriguing aspect of this mode is the fact that killed players won't respawn, but will instead appear as ghosts. Kojima has not released any information about the purpose of the phantom players.
Three of the online maps are actually areas from the MGS3 one-player and four completely new areas have been shown, ranging from the jungle/forest area to skirmish-zones in a big city. All levels continually emphasize the need for teamwork and cooperation to become victorious. Konami has also said that the best-ranked player on each team will be given the option of playing as a named character during the next match, such as Snake or Ocelot. Some other perks mentioned to be in Subsistence include the rotatable third-person camera (thank heavens), some more available material in Snake vs Ape modes, the original versions of Metal Gear and MG2 (for the very first time being available in America!), an unlockable Duel Mode, when, once the solo game beaten, you can choose any boss battle in the game and play them as you wish.
